What is LMS?

What is a Learning Management System?

A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software or Web-based application used to plan, administer, track and report learning processes. With a powerful Learning Management System (LMS) organizations can efficiently manage learning content, resources and learners, deliver the learning content to students and then track progress and performance across multiple types of learning activities.

Learning activities may include but are not limited to:

  • Instructor-Led Training (ILT)
  • eLearning or online training
  • On-the Job-Training (OJT)
  • discussion forums
  • video conferencing and virtual classrooms

In addition to utilizing a Learning Management System (LMS) to efficiently deliver eLearning courses, the software assists organizations with student registration, competency management, skills-gap analysis, certification, virtual classes and resource allocation (textbooks, instructors, etc.). Corporations use Learning Management Systems (LMS) to administer corporate training and compliance programs resulting in streamlined tasks such as automated recordkeeping and employee registrations. Educational institutions use Learning Management Systems (LMS) to enhance and support classroom teaching and facilitate the distribution of courses to large learner populations across the world.

What is a Learning Content Management System?

A Learning Content Management System (LCMS) is a multi-user environment where learning developers can create, store, reuse, manage, and deliver small units of learning content and assets called learning objects. These assets can include media files, assessment items, simulations, text, graphics and other objects which are stored in a central object repository. A robust Learning Content Management System (LCMS) facilitates the organization of learning content and effectively presents it to learners via a Learning Management System (LMS).
